How old are your children?

Hi Zakia,

Welcome to the forum!
You've certainly come to the right place for support.
I'm 60 and have had RA for 9 years.
Carpel tunnel is very common with RA. I haven't had it but I'm sure others will be able to advise you.
Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi Zakia,

A big welcome to you!

I'm 39 with two children ... my daughter (10) and son (6). I've had RA for six years now and I know how hard it is to bring up children when you feel so debilitated sometimes. The day to day routine that you used to sail through becomes almost impossible. It takes time to adjust to new routines and to accept that you are not capable of the same level of activity as before and that it's OK!

I'm looking forward to getting to know you better.

x x

Hi Zakia,
there were some discussions fairly recently about carpel tunnel syndrome. I've done a v quick search but can't find the one i'm thinking of but i'm sure someone will be along soon who will be able to share some experience.
My work colleague had this diagnosed last year, she needed an op but had very positive experience with excellent recovery and no further problems.

My two girls were little when i was diagnosed. There are just over 2.5years between them so very similar ages to what yours are now, so i have an idea what u may be going through. I think it does become a little easier as they get older and it's helped mine develop independence as they have learnt to be helpful round the house xx
My two are now 13 and 16 and having grown up with me being a bit creaky in the mornings and popping pills seem very understanding and thoughtful, when they were the ages yours are now - Sophie had just developed the terrible two's - unfortunately she's the oldest and was almost FIVE at the time - ....she is SO placid now - but then WELL, Whew... it exhausts me, just remembering!!!!

...it is hard when your little ones are so young but my advice, for what its worth is don't try to be supermum because i think a lot of that stuff is just in our heads! It took a few years for me until the penny suddenly dropped - ....to them we're already supermum!!!

Tiredness is part of RA, not to mention part and parcel of bringing up little ones - fatigue is one of the most difficult RA symptoms to deal with and manage - so learning to pace activities is one of the most useful coping techniques.
Well, that - and my daily mantra ...."whats not done, is not done, never mind"

After all, why do today what can be put off until tomorrow XXXXX ;)

Take care love Liz xx

Hello Zakia and welcome to the forum. It makes me feel so sad that yet another young Mum has joined out ranks, however, you have come to the right place for good support and advice.

I have had Carpol Tunnel syndrome. In the beginning, the rheumie injected a steroid into my wrists on two occasions which did help keep it at bay for about 6 months or so each time. Eventually this stopped working so I had day surgery to clean it out, was awake throughout and came home after a few hours wearing the most massive badage you ever did see. This was removed after a day or so, stitches about 7-10 days later and I have had no trouble with it ever since. In practical terms, I did manage to comb my hair with difficulty but was soon back to 'normal'. With young children you would need some practical help for at least a week I would imagine but this can be discussed with the surgeon if this route is decided. The relief from suffering the terrible pain and pins and needles, especially during the night, was immediate and, has not returned.

Look forward to chatting with you.

Hi Zakia,

Welcome!

I have had RA since childhood. We have five children (13years down to 5years) and it is extremely hard bringing up young children with this horrid illness, but possible too with lots of support.

Love,

Amanda

Hi Zakia

Welcome to the forum!

I'm Lyn, married to Mike, and have four children all in various stages of education. We live in Thornton Cleveleys in Lancashire. I have had RA for almost 22 years and brought up my family with it so do understand the problems you go through. At one point I had three babies under 16 months so not easy but you do adapt and get on with it, needs must etc.!!

Sorry to hear that you have RA but you will find masses of support and friendly people here ThumpUp . It's a great place to be Smile Look forward to getting to know you better,

Lyn x

Hi again Zakia

Here's a link to the recent thread where we were discussing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome . I remembered when Liz mentioned it and luckily managed to find it again! It might give you a little more info or food for thought.

The key with RA is to pace yourself; easier said than done I know, but it does work if you can 'crack the code'! Do only the necessary and try to rest, even short breaks with a brew help Smile I had to take ill health retirement very early as I simply couldn't cope, it comes hard and the worst part being missing the company (well the pay as well I guess!). I became very confined with small children and a dreadful illness but it does get better especially once the disease is under control.

Take care Zakia,

Lyn x
